Genealogy dating old photographs

genealogy dating old photographs-57

Knowing when a photograph was taken, where it was taken – together with the details of the image itself – often make it possible to decide who the sitter really is. Sometimes it can even confirm that it is NOT who you think it is! There can be so many clues which, when all taken together, can give you a very accurate result.

This post is sponsored by The Imaging Alliance; however, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Last week we announced an exciting new Ancestry DNA feature called “New Ancestor Discoveries.” The response to this feature launch has been very interesting to watch—we’ve received lots of feedback breathless with praise because we “proved” a relationship, and some feedback that dismisses the feature because it does not “prove” relationships.

As we consider feedback from Earlier this year, we introduced a series on our blog featuring the expertise of Betty Shubert, historical fashion expert and author of Out of Style to help time date old family photographs based on our ancestor’s fashion choices and clothing trends of their time.

I learned to pay close attention to what people were wearing, what they were doing, and what appeared in the backgrounds of the photos.
